My career in the leather industry began over three decades ago. Ich sah zuerst nicht den Text, sondern den Rand. Dieser leicht ausgefranste Seitenrand eines Magazins, schon zweimal gelesen, dreimal umgeblättert, ehrlich gesagt ein bisschen zerknittert, weil jemand es mit ins Bett genommen hatte. Neben dem Nachttisch das Handy, Display an, Online Slots laufen ohne Ton, nur Farben, nur Bewegung, wer schon mal nachts nicht schlafen konnte, weiß, wie sowas passiert. Du setzt Zeit, Nerven, manchmal deinen Ruf, und hoffst, dass der Text trägt. Oder zumindest jemanden trifft.

In der Redaktion stehen Tassen, alte Ausgaben, lose Zettel. Jemand erzählt von einer Reportage, die sich angefühlt hat wie eine verlorene Wette. Zu viel riskiert, falscher Ton. Passiert. Ein anderer lacht und meint, das sei wie beim Betting, man lernt, Quoten zu lesen, Stimmungen, Zeitpunkte. Die Leute hier schreiben Bücher für lange Nächte und Magazine für kurze Pausen. Manche Leser kommen vom Glücksspiel, andere vom Sport, manche spielen Karten online, manche blättern einfach nur. Diese Firma versucht nicht, alles zu erklären oder zu glätten. Sie lässt Brüche zu. So wie im Leben. So wie im Casino. Ein Text darf stolpern. Darf wiederholen. Darf abschweifen. Wer schon mal einen guten Artikel gelesen hat, der weiß, dass er sich anfühlt wie ein Gespräch um zwei Uhr morgens, irgendwo zwischen Kaffee, Bildschirm und der Frage: Noch eine Runde oder schlafen gehen.
